Inexpensive Fall Fun with the Family

Want to have some fun with your family for no or little cost? Here are some fun ideas I’ve collected over the years.
Take a walk in your neighborhood or nearby park and observe and collect leaves. (You can create art projects with the leaves you collected, such as leaf rubbings. Or you can go home and research what kinds of trees you observed by the shapes of the leaves you collected.)
Make a pumpkin pie from scratch. (Yes, I said from scratch! There are many simple recipe ideas on the web. It is a lot of fun for the children and an alternative use for the pumpkins most children are bringing home from school field trips to the pumpkin patch.)
Go outside and play in the leaves with your family. (Such simple fun we sometimes forget as adults are the most pleasant memories from our own childhood. Let’s build some of these memories with our children.)
Look for animals and tracks. (It’s a great time to catch deer in the early morning and late evening hours)
Plant a tree. (Preferably one that naturally grows in your area. Use seeds from trees near you that you like. Watch it grow with your family.)
Check out fall programs at your local metro or state parks and recreation programs. (Our favorite are the hikes our metro parks put on each year.)
Get out and play games. (Throw the ball around. Our family enjoys football. If you are not competitive, try hide-and-seek or tag. The cooler temperatures are safer than those hot smoggy days of summer. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather.)
