Inexpensive Fall Fun with the Family

Want to have some fun with your family for no or little cost? Here are some fun ideas I’ve collected over the years.

Take a walk in your neighborhood or nearby park and observe and collect leaves. (You can create art projects with the leaves you collected, such as leaf rubbings. Or you can go home and research what kinds of trees you observed by the shapes of the leaves you collected.)

Make a pumpkin pie from scratch. (Yes, I said from scratch! There are many simple recipe ideas on the web. It is a lot of fun for the children and an alternative use for the pumpkins most children are bringing home from school field trips to the pumpkin patch.)

Go outside and play in the leaves with your family. (Such simple fun we sometimes forget as adults are the most pleasant memories from our own childhood. Let’s build some of these memories with our children.)

Look for animals and tracks
. (It’s a great time to catch deer in the early morning and late evening hours)

Plant a tree. (Preferably one that naturally grows in your area. Use seeds from trees near you that you like. Watch it grow with your family.)

Check out fall programs at your local metro or state parks and recreation programs. (Our favorite are the hikes our metro parks put on each year.)

Get out and play games. (Throw the ball around. Our family enjoys football. If you are not competitive, try hide-and-seek or tag. The cooler temperatures are safer than those hot smoggy days of summer. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather.)

Got more ideas? Please share.

Hats off to Substitue Teachers!

Hats off to all of you who have been substitute teachers for years! Speaking from being a former full time teacher turned part time sub, you guys are amazing! I never know how challenging it was to try to step in for a teacher. I thought that as long as the teacher had a well planned lesson, the job was a cinch. Well, I was wrong. Aside from not knowing names, routines such as attendance, and simple classroom specific procedures, you have to be flexible enough to go with the flow at a minute’s notice. With a new found respect, have crossed over to the other side, I salute you, Subs, and gladly rename you Master Teachers!

What do you think?

What do you think of the statements below? They have been credited to Abraham Lincoln. I don’t know who really wrote them, however.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away men’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.
